Read “Salute From the Shore to Soar” in The State Newspaper

Salute from the Shore IV will “fly anyway” again this year despite the unfortunate impact of Federal “Sequestration” budget cuts. Sequestration has forced the Military to abandon ALL air shows and flyovers across the country until further notice. We all wish the F-16s, operated by the amazing members of the 20th Air Wing at Shaw AFB, could again fly the South Carolina coast, but we also understand completely their duty to the defense of our country in lean budgetary times.

Undeterred and with the blessing of our friends from the Air Force, Salute from the Shore has partnered with owners of Vintage military aircraft who will fly an air parade along the SC coast. Barry Avent, a businessman and vintage aircraft pilot from Bennettsville, SC led a flight of three vintage aircraft last year and has stepped up to organize a much larger flight this year.

Salute from the Shore urges visitors to salute by wearing red, white and blue on the beaches during the flyover. Salute from the Shore also encourages participants to tell their personal stories about why they love America and those that protect it by shooting their own video and images of the event for sharing on social networks to be seen by American Armed Forces deployed throughout the world.

Corporations, businesses, foundations and individuals, including First Citizens Bank, Colliers International and the Jackson Companies, have stepped up to provide financial support to assist the owners of the vintage aircraft with their expenses and to provide funding for the video. Others interested in supporting this initiative are encouraged to contact the organizers at www.salutefromtheshore.org.

Once complete, Salute from the Shore will edit the footage into a video tribute to our Armed Forces. For more information or to view last year’s Salute, please visit the website or find Salute from the Shore on Facebook.

Salute from the Shore III was a huge success this year! We can’t thank the 79th Fighter Squadron from Shaw Air Force Base enough for their support. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many people who help make this event possible, including the Town of Pawleys Island as well as our many sponsors, including Piggly Wiggly, First Citizens Bank, Southeastern Freight and PGBA among many others.

We also would like to than Barry Avent and the volunteers who flew vintage World War II aircraft carrying veterans. This new element added a great deal to the experience for everyone, and we appreciate your participation!

See below for some wonderful news coverage of the event. We’ll add more in the weeks to come, concluding with the final Salute from the Shore III video tribute.

“Salute from the Shore III” military flyover of the South Carolina coast to be flown July 4th by last armed forces to leave Iraq!

This July 4th, beachgoers along the South Carolina coast will once again experience an exciting and memorable way to honor our Armed Forces and their families who protect the freedom we celebrate on this patriotic American holiday during Salute from the Shore III.

Beginning in Little River at 1:00 pm, F-16s of the 79th Fighter Squadron “The Flying Tigers” of the 20th Fighter Wing stationed at Shaw Air Force Base will conduct a flyover of the SC coast. The flight will cover every beach on the SC coast before concluding south of Hilton Head Island at about 1:30 pm. The event presents a unique opportunity for patriotic Americans to connect with each other up and down the coast on the July 4.

We are especially honored to have the ‘Flying Tigers’ flying the mission this year. These pilots were the very last U.S. armed forces to leave Iraq. They flew air support while ground forces literally closed the gate on their way home. We are honored by their participation. Salute from the Shore is sponsoring the event with the assistance of the Town of Pawleys Island for the third consecutive year.

For Salute from the Shore III, organizers are excited to announce that a 5th F-16 will accompany the flyover. This aircraft will have a photographer who will record the flyover from above. In addition, the group is honored to announce the addition of an aerial parade, including vintage military aircraft that will follow the F-16s from Myrtle Beach to Folly Beach. This special procession is being piloted by private aircraft owners who will host military veterans aboard their aircraft. These planes are much slower than the jets, so participants are requested to be patient while waiting for these special aircraft.

Salute from the Shore urges visitors to offer their own individual salute by wearing red, white and blue on the beaches during the flyover. The organization also encourages participants to tell their personal stories about why they love America by shooting their own video and images of the event for sharing on social networks to be seen by American Armed Forces deployed throughout the world.

People who “like” Salute from the Shore on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SalutefromtheShore) can upload photos directly. They are also encouraged to follow on Twitter (@saluteshore) and to use the hashtag #saluteshore on tweets and photo uploads. More information is available at www.salutefromtheshore.org.

Once complete, Salute from the Shore will edit the footage into a video tribute to our Armed Forces. Last year’s Salute can be viewed at www.salutefromtheshore.org.

The Salute from the Shore flyover can be seen at approximately the following times along the South Carolina coast:

North Myrtle Beach 1:01 PM
Surfside 1:05 PM
Pawley’s Island 1:08 PM
Isle of Palms 1:18 PM
Folly Beach 1:20 PM
Edisto Island 1:25 PM
Hilton Head Island 1:29 PM

Salute from the Shore II was an amazing day and we are truly humbled by the number of people who came to the beaches to honor our armed forces on Independence Day. We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support for this patriotic tribute, and have received an incredible amount of pictures, videos and stories from people who were able to participate.

Thanks to everyone who was a part of Salute from the Shore II, and many thanks especially to the 77th Fighter Squadron “The Gamblers,” Town of Pawley’s Island, PGBA and all of the wonderful people and sponsors who helped make Salute from the Shore II such a memorable experience.

We sincerely regret that a safety concern prevented the Flyover from reaching Hilton Head. The FAA was included in the planning process as were the incredible professional aviators from the 20th Fighter Wing, but the airspace was not clear enough to allow a safe flyover. We are already working to see how this can be avoided next year, and we hope the patriotic people of Hilton Head will be able to take part in this wonderful event next year.

We are hard at work on our official video tribute and plan to release it in August. We are excited by all of the footage and can’t wait to share this with everyone around the world!

We will also announce a winner of the Salute from the Shore Best Beach Display Contest very soon, so stay tuned!
